Pennyrile Region Secures Major Funding for Recreational and Park Improvements

[Hopkinsville, KY] – Communities in the Pennyrile region have been awarded significant grant funding through two highly competitive federal programs aimed at enhancing outdoor recreation and public parks. The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) and the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) provide critical support for trail development, park improvements, and outdoor facility upgrades, benefiting both residents and visitors.

The Recreational Trails Program (RTP), administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), assists in the acquisition, development, and maintenance of recreational trails and trailhead facilities for both motorized and non-motorized use. Out of only eight projects approved statewide, three were awarded to the Pennyrile region:
  • Christian County Fiscal Court – Awarded $117,463, this funding will support the development of a mountain bike skills training park in Western Kentucky, expanding outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • City of Madisonville (Hopkins County) – Granted $150,000, this funding will contribute to the completion of the final 1.25 miles of trail at Madisonville City Park, enhancing accessibility and outdoor enjoyment.
  • City of Earlington (Hopkins County) – Securing $176,000, this funding will assist in the continued development and improvement of trails and amenities at Loch Mary Lake ATV Park.

Additionally, the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has provided crucial grants to support the revitalization of public parks and outdoor recreation facilities. The LWCF is a federally funded program that helps protect natural areas, acquire land for outdoor recreation, and renovate public facilities such as campgrounds, sports fields, and trails. The following projects in the Pennyrile region have received funding:
  • City of Fredonia (Caldwell County) – Awarded $92,670 to revitalize Buddy Rogers Park, including the installation of a new tee ball field and repairs to the concession and barbecue pit areas.

Amy Frogue, Community & Economic Development Director, emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “Investing in our parks and recreational spaces is an investment in the future of our communities. These projects will not only enhance outdoor opportunities for residents but also attract visitors, promote healthy lifestyles, and support local economies.”

These investments highlight the region’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities, improving public spaces, and enhancing community well-being.
